《韦氏新大学辞典》(第九版)把Alliteration(头韵)定义为：在两个或两个以上邻近的词或音节中，通常为起首辅音的重复。头韵是一种语音修辞方式，常用于文章的标题、诗歌及广告语中，简明生动，常可起到突出重点、加深印象、平衡节奏、抒发感情的作用。在我们的大学英语学习中，到处可见头韵的运用。

　　《2l世纪大学英语》第二册第一课"Winston Churchill-his other life"中"Churchill paid the price，both publicly and privately-He was removed from the Admiralty and lost his position of political influence."六个/p/音渲染了丘吉尔的痛苦和失落：作为公务员和个人他都付出了代价--被免去了海军部的职务，失去了显赫的政治地位。同册第九课Text C标题"What's Wrong With Our Weather"也是典型的押头韵。《大学英语》第四册第一课的课文标题引用了一则广告语"Big Bucks the Easy Way"。"buck"是美国英语俚语"dollar"之意，而"big buck"即我们常说的大钞。"Big Bucks the Easy Way(轻轻松松赚大钱)"中重复的是爆破音 /b/, 读起来朗朗上口，铿锵有力，富有节奏感，令人难忘。同册第四课"Jim Thorp"一文中，作者多处运用头韵这一修辞手法，使文章生动活泼，一个伟大而优秀的运动员的形象跃然纸上。如"one big and broad，the other small and slight"中两个/b/音与两个/s/音轻重分明，使高大魁梧的Jim Thorp的形象更加鲜明；后文中还有"Thorp breezed through both events，his dark hair flopping，his smile flashing， his muscled body gliding along the track"。这里的/b/、/fl/的押韵有利地表现了Jim Thorp在运动场上生机勃勃、身手敏捷，令读者久久难忘。同学们只要稍加注意就会发现英语中有许多头韵修辞，这种修辞方法为文章增色不少。

　　英语中熟语、谚语的头韵极其普遍，如：

　　No sweet without sweat. 先苦后甜。

　　through thick and thin 同甘共苦

　　Love laughs at locksmiths. 爱情锁不住。

　　Forbidden fruit is sweet. 禁果格外甜。

　　Fortune favors the fool. 人傻命好。

　　safe and sound 安然无恙

　　A light heart lives long. 静以修身。

　　All rivers run into sea. 海纳百川。

　　Beauty lies in the lover's eyes. 情人眼里出西施。

　　A bad beginning makes a bad ending. 不善始者不善终。

　　Be swift to hear, slow to speak. 听宜敏捷，言宜缓行。

　　Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. 早睡早起身体好。

　　A friend without faults will never be found. 没有十全十美的朋友。
