英语中有些副词是以动词分词加后缀-ly派生而来的，如：accordingly, increasingly, convincingly, painstakingly, repeatedly, reportedly, retiredly, seemingly, strikingly, unitedly, undoubtedly, supposingly, unsuspectingly, unexpectedly等。由分词加-ly构成的副词被称为分词副词。分词副词在英语中所占的比例虽不大，且大多数未被收录入词典中，但如何正确理解分词副词的含义，却难倒了不少英语学习者。

　　我们可将分词副词的表层结构转换成其深层结构--从句，分析从句中的主语和谓语动词之间的关系：1)二者如处于主动关系，则动词为现在分词-ing；如二者处于被动关系，则动词为过去分词-ed。2)如主语处于进行时态，则动词为现在分词-ing；如主语处于完成时态，则动词为过去分词-ed。这样，我们就能很容易地理解分词副词表层结构的真正含义。

　　下面让我们逐句分析分词副词的深层结构来理解其真正含义。

　　一、分词副词修饰动词

　　1. It convincingly concludes that Beijing possesses the abilities to host the games.(=It convinces people to conclude that...)convincingly译为"令人信服地"。

　　2. The little girl surprisedly looked at the amusing toys.(= The little girl was surprised to look...)surprisedly译为"吃惊地"。

　　3. He repeatedly urged his million member group not to resort to violence.(= He repeated it 　　again to urge... )repeatedly 译为"再三地"。

　　二、分词副词修饰形容词或介词

　　1. This population density is astonishingly high when compared with the densities of European and American cities.(=This high population density astonishes people...)astonishingly译为"令人惊讶地"。

　　2. She strikingly expressed her manner in her words.(=She expressed in a striking way...)strikingly译为"引人注目地"。

　　3. They are reportedly at large and are to be tried in a separate lawsuit.(=They are reported to be at large...)reportedly译为"据报道"。

　　三、分词副词修饰整个句子

　　1. Surprisingly, the U.S. leadership in public relations is being threatened by public relations efforts in other countries.(=It surprises people that...)surprisingly译为"令人吃惊的是"。

　　2. Admittedly, the fund sector's tremendous losses last year had much to do with the prolonged stock market.(=It's admitted by all that...)admittedly译为"众所周知的是"。

　　3. Unexpectedly, those washing-machines are selling well.(=It's not expected by people that...)unexpectedly译为"让人预料不到的是"。
