What are teaching aids? How
can I use the blackboard, tape recorder, and overhead projector (OHP)? We'll
look together at some ideas. |
| 1. What are teaching aids? |
· Equipment which is already in the classroom
or school
· Depending on your school, aids may include the blackboard, tape recorder,
CD player, OHP, video recorder, language laboratory, and computers. |
| 2. How can I use the blackboard? |
· The blackboard is one of the
most useful aids because it is in every class, and you can use it in many
different ways.
· Before you teach your lesson, plan your blackboard work.
· Think, for example, about layout, colours you will use, how you will make
sure children at the back and sides of the class can read your writing easily,
and so on.
· In the lesson itself, if children need to copy from the blackboard, stand
or sit away from it, so that children can see clearly.
· If you are talking to the class while you write on the blackboard, turn
and face them as much as possible. This helps you to keep eye contact with
them and so to keep control in class. |
| 3. How can I use the tape recorder? |
· The tape recorder is a useful
aid because it gives children a chance to listen to English spoken by different
people in different situations.
· Make sure the tape recorder is in a place in class where children have
the best chance to hear it. The speakers must face the children. You may
need to move children closer to the tape recorder.
· Make sure you know how to use the machine, and that the tape is in the
right position in the recorder.
· Have a plan in case the tape recorder doesn't work. You might, for example,
read what is on the tape yourself, or have a story with you to use in emergencies.

| 4. How can I use the OHP? |
· Like the blackboard, the OHP
is very versatile. The big advantage is that you can prepare transparencies
before lessons and also use them in other classes.
· As with the tape recorder, make sure you can use the machine easily.
· Check that you can get the transparency image the right size for the class,
and that you can get it in focus.
· Produce attractive transparencies. To do this, don't write or draw too
near the edges. Any handwriting will need to be about twice as large as
normal. Put lined paper under the transparency to help you write or draw.
