Introduction

What are teaching and testing activities?
Is there a place for both in the classroom? This unit looks at these questions. |
1. What are teaching activities? |
· They try to help children achieve the objectives
of the lesson, course, syllabus, or curriculum.
· Let's look at an example. If a course objective is for children to be
able to say what people look like, you will use teaching activities which
give children the chance to speak about people.
· The key word is 'help'. You can help children before teaching activities
by checking or teaching important vocabulary and grammar, and by checking
that they understand what to do.
· You can help during the activity by monitoring it.
· You can help after the activity by giving feedback to children about their
performance. |
2. What are classroom testing activities? |
· Some testing activities try
to see if children have achieved the objectives of the lesson, course, syllabus,
or curriculum.
· Other testing activities try to see if children have made progress towards
achieving the objectives of the lesson, course, syllabus, or curriculum.
· Teaching and testing activities are both concerned with objectives, but
teaching activities involve support from the teacher, and testing activities
usually do not. |
3. What do I need to know about testing activities? |
· Make sure tests reflect learning
objectives and teaching activities.
· Let's imagine that children have been practising speaking dialogues about
food in their coursebook unit. If you want to test this, your test should
also be about food, and should ask children to speak.
· If the test is not about food, or asks children to write a dialogue, not
speak it, the test is not fair, because it is not testing what children
have learned.
· Tests are only one way of assessing achievement and progress. You can
also assess by observing and asking. |
4. How can teaching and testing activities
support each other? |
· You can use information about
children's strengths and weaknesses you find in your teaching when you make
tests.
· Your tests should include the kinds of activities children do when you
teach them.
· Remember to have a balance of teaching and testing activities. If you
test too often, children may learn only for the test. This may mean that
they are good at memorising for tests, but that they forget a lot of what
they remembered after the test is finished. |
一、Summary |
Teaching and testing activities
have different purposes, but they can support each other. Remember to balance
teaching and testing activities. |
