Introduction
|
What is assessment? Why should
we assess children? How can we assess them? Let's look together. |
1. What is assessment? |
· Assessment is a way of getting information about
both children's learning and our teaching.
· Assessment is NOT the same as testing and giving marks, as testing is
only ONE tool for finding out this information. |
2. Why assess children? |
There are many reasons for assessing
children. These include:
· To help children identify their strengths and the areas they need to develop.
· To help children and teachers see if children have reached a particular
standard.
· To find out what children like and dislike in their learning.
· To give the teacher feedback so that they can plan future work. |
3. What can I assess and how can I assess it?
|
What:
· Language(grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling)
· Skills(speaking, listening, reading, writing)
· Non-linguistic skills(cooperation with classmates, effort, study skills)
How:
· Informally, by observing them at work in class or reading homework and
taking notes over a period of time.
· Informally by asking them about topics and activities they like, and dislike,
and by asking them about how they like to learn.
· Formally, by testing.
· We can ask children to assess their own work. This is called self-assessment.
Self-assessment is not easy at first, as children need help and training,
but it does help to develop non-linguistic skills which are important across
all subjects in the curriculum. |
4. How can I use the results of my assessment?
|
· To give children feedback
on areas they are strong or weak in. Do remember to give feedback on the
strong points, not only the weak ones!
· To make activities easier or more difficult for some children.
· To give the class more practice if results suggest that most children
are weak in a skill, vocabulary areas or language structure.
· To give individual help when possible to some children.
· To plan work for the next semester. |
一、Summary |
Assessment is more than just
testing, and it can give useful information about learning both to children
and teachers. We can use this information to give feedback to children,
to adjust our classroom activities, and to plan future work. |
