Introduction
|
This unit will look at ways
the teacher can help children to behave well in the class. It will look
at what good behaviour is, and at what the teacher can do before and during
the lesson to encourage it. |
1. What is good behaviour? |
· Assessment is a way of getting information about both children's
learning and our teaching.
· Assessment is NOT the same as testing and giving marks, as testing is
only ONE tool for finding out this information. |
2. Why do children misbehave in class? |
Again, reasons may depend on the school,
the teacher, or the child.
· The school: the child may not be motivated to learn by the atmosphere
at school. He or she may misbehave to add interest to the lesson.
· The teacher: the teacher's behaviour or teaching style does not motivate
the child to learn.
· The child: may need specialist help for a special educational need.
· The child: may find it hard to control him or herself, and be easily encouraged
by classmates to break the rules of good behaviour. |
3. How can I plan for good behaviour? |
· With classes that find it difficult to
behave well, you may need to start the year with more teacher-led activities
and slowly introduce more fun activities such as songs, games, and quizzes.
· Plan fun activities when you have more control over the class. Children
will usually behave well if they enjoy the lesson. · Plan a varied lesson
process. You might want, for example, to have a lesson in which part is
led by the teacher, part has some pairwork, and part has some individual
work. · Plan for a varied lesson content. A lesson or week of lessons might
include activities which practise a balance of speaking, listening, reading,
and writing. |
4. What can I do in class to help children behave well?
|
· Get silence before you talk to the class.
·
Learn all the children's names. This has an effect on behaviour! · Set clear
goals for activities so that children know what you expect them to achieve. ·
Timing: be flexible with different classes, but in general use activities
which are not too long, and make sure you finish the lesson on time. |
