Memo To: Daniel Thomas, Editor-in-chief From: Sally Jin, Human Resources Manager Date: 2003-12-6 Re: The process of interviewing and hiring new members of staff. We have recently updated our company procedures for interviewing and hiring new employees, and I want to run through how it works before you go about hiring your new editorial assistant. Advertising the position All positions must now be advertised both internally and externally. Even if you have an individual who already works for the company in mind for the role, you are required to advertise the position publicly. Where to place advertisements is of course entirely up to you. First-round interviews A standard field for first-round interviews would include between six and eight candidates. You must interview some external candidates, unless of course you have received no applications (an unlikely scenario). You can carry out these interviews on your own and ask anything you think relevant. Second-round interviews You should halve the field for the second round, and so see about three or four people. You must also notify Human Resources so that one of our staff can attend the interviews and ask some standard questions of our own. Hiring Which candidate to hire is ultimately your decision of course. However, you should consult with the Human Resources representative in case he/she has any objections to your final choice. The new process is intended to give us a more transparent and consistent approach to hiring new staff. Please call me if any of this is not clear. |
