What is feedback?
How can I give it? How can I encourage children to give feedback on their
own learning? Let's look together at some practical ideas. |
1. What is feedback? |
· Feedback is information the teacher gives to
children about their performance in an activity. · The purpose of feedback
is to help the child improve their performance next time. · So, feedback
usually involves assessment or correction of children's work.
· Feedback can focus both on language and on how well the children work
in an activity.
· You can give or get feedback as often as you feel it is useful. |
2. How can I give feedback on children's speaking? |
· Don't only give marks. Comments
such as "Remember to use 'he', not 'she' to speak about boys",
or "Good work, but speak up, next time, please" can give children
very helpful information. · Don't correct or assess everything. This may
demotivate children and take too much time. · If the focus of the activity
is on accuracy, correct the child or encourage them to correct themselves. ·
If the focus of the activity is on fluency, correct or encourage the child
to correct only mistakes which make communication difficult. |
3. How can I give feedback on children's writing? |
· Spend a little time in class
asking children to read each other's work. They can learn from each other,
and can sometimes give helpful feedback to each other. · Encourage children
to write on alternate lines. They can make corrections more easily on their
work this way. · As with speaking, comments can give children helpful information.
Examples are: "Remember to finish sentences with a full stop",
or "Nice handwriting, but check your spelling of animals in this story".
· If you give marks, try giving these on a second draft of work after children
have made corrections. This gives them a bigger chance of being successful.
|
4. How can I encourage children to give feedback
on their learning? |
Here are some possibilities:
· Ask children to think and say how useful an activity is:Very useful not
very usefu.
· Ask children to finish sentences: "I am good at….";"I
need to work harder on…"; "I worked well with…" · Ask children
to write down three things they learned in the lesson. · When children give
feedback and when you discuss their ideas, you may want to do this in Chinese.
This is because the purpose is not to practise English, but to encourage
children to think about their own learning and to give you feedback for
your future work. |
一、Summary |
Feedback can be
a key factor in a student's continuing motivation to learn. Consequently,
feedback must be a planned and integral part of the lessons we teach. But
it is not only feedback from teacher to student that is important. The feedback
that students provide for the teacher can also play an important role in
the decisions we make about future lessons. We have seen that comments can
be a good way of giving and getting feedback. We have also looked at ways
in which the teacher can get feedback by helping children to think about
their own learning. |
