  Sandstorms Strike as 2001 dawns

Sandstorms hit northwestern Chinas Gansu Province and North Chinas Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (内蒙古自治区) on the first day of the new century①.According to Sun Landong, a meteorologist (气象学者) with the Lanzhou Meteorology observatory, visibility (能见度) was less than 100 metres in Minqin, a Gansu country near Inner Mongolia, because of sand. When visibility drops to less than 1 kilometre, it is called a sandstorm. The sandstorm in Minqin blew up dust in nieghbouring town, such as Baiyin, Wuwei, Jinchang and Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu Province. Dustladen winds also swept into Beijing.

Brought by northwester blowing at more than 20 metres per second, dust first reached the capitals suburbs at 7:00 a.m., downtown areas 9:00 a.m. The winds, which died down to as low as 8℃ below zero and many flights put off their planned time from the citys airport.

It is quite rare for sandstorms, which are frequent between March and June, to happen in winter, when the earth is frozen②. The sandstorms in Gansu and Inner Mongolia do not necessarily mean there will be more of them in the spring than last year, when they were serious, but Beijing is taking it very seriously. It is reported that Beijing will spend 6 billion yuan (US $ 725 million) in preventing sandstorms in the capital and has already set up a special team to make sure what causes them.

In the past hundred years a million people have died in earthquakes, another million have been killed by hurricanes and tornadoes (龙卷风) and 9 million have lost their lives in floods. In additional to this many millions more have died as a result of hunger and disease①. We should also not forget in many of the worlds countries drought, serious water shortage, is a fact of life, especially in the African Sahel area bordering the Sahara Desert.

Scientists and engineers around the world have made great advances in earthquake engineering. It is, of course, impossible physically to move cities such as Tokyo and San Francisco that have been built on earthquake belts②. But most often it is not the earthquake that kills people. It is the falling buildings, bridges and so on that cause deaths, and such a happening can be greatly reduced by better building programs.

Finally, perhaps we need to consider the natural disaster that we are causing ourselves. Through our mismanagement of the planets resources we have sped up the dying out of hundreds of sorts of plants and animals, at the same time possibly destroying our own longterm surroundings for life. Maybe this is one disaster that could be prevented if we are willing to act with a sense of responsibility.

  Passage C

After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report. The damage and death toll (伤亡) could have been much worse.

More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.

Injures and deaths were relatively less in Los Angles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the citys highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the citys buildings and highways, making them more resistant (有抵抗力的) to quakes①.

Despite the good news, civil engineers arent resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints (蓝图的) for improved quakeresistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place.

In the past, making structures quakeresistant meant firm yet flexible (柔韧的) materials, such as steel and wood, which bend without breaking②. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact (影响) of ground vibrations (颤动). The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports, called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquakes vibrations. When the ground shakes and the buildings tip forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction.

The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.

②In the past, making structures quakeresistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, which bend without breaking.

  1. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low is that ____ .

  A. new computers had been installed in the buildings

  B. occurred in the residential areas (居民区) rather than on the highways

  C. large numbers of Los Angeles residents had rushed into Los Angeles for holiday

  D. improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways

  2. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ____ .

  A. counterbalance an earthquakes action on the building

  B. predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracy

  C. help strengthen the foundation of the building

  D. measure the impact of an earthquakes vibrations

  3. The smart buildings discussed in the passage ____ .

  A. would cause serious financial problems

  B. would be worthwhile though costly

  C. would increase the complexity of architectural design

  D. can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes

  4. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing (最小化) the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on ____ .

  A. the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital construction

  C. outline the history of the development of quakeresistant building materials

  D. report new developments in constructing quakeresistant building

  Passage D

One way of preventing floods may be by making rain! This may sound rather 1. As we know, heavy rain is the 2 of floods, and in Malaysia most of the 3 are caused by the annual monsoon (季风), which brings heavy rain to the east coast. If, 4, the rain cloud be made 5 in the South China Sea, there would be 6 floods since the rain clouds would not reach the east coast.

Is it possible to make 7 give up their rain? Yes, it is.

As you 8 know, clouds are caused 9 air containing watervapour. The air rises and, since water vapour becomes water when it cools, very tiny drops of water are formed①. Since these drops are very 10, they float in the air and 11 a cloud. When the cloud rises, however, the drops become 12. Because of this, they 13 together and become big drops. The big drops are no longer able to float because of their 14, and they fall. As they 15, they pick up more drops and become bigger. This is the cause of rain.

Rain making 16 making these bigger drops from and fall 17 they would normally do so. This can be done by “seeding” the clouds with chemicals, 18 planting seeds in the ground. Rain can be produced 19 by three chemicals. The seeding is done by 20 which fly through the clouds.

  Passage A

  Passage B

  Passage C

由短文第五段最后一句“When the ground shakes and the buildings tip forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction.”

  Passage D

  15.D由上一句末“...and they fall.”

  19.D词组in this way的意思是“用这种方法”。

One way of preventing floods may be by making rain! (Passage D, Para 1, Sentence 1)

①Man is trying to find ways to cure cancer.

②He had a strange way of making his classes lively and interesting.

但要注意 way of后面不能接名词,如后接名词,则不用 way of, 而要用 means of来代替。如:

①Ive tried all possible means of communication.

②We can also express our thoughts by means of body language. (不能说 ways of body language)
