1. used to do sth.; be / get used to doing sth.; be used to do sth. used to do sth. 表“过去常常做某事(但现在不再干)”;be / get used to doing sth. 表“习惯于做某事”; be used to do sth. 表“被用来做某事”。如: I used to get up late but now I’m used to getting up early and having a walk. 过去我常常起床很晚,但现在我习惯于早起散步了。 The pipes are used to carry waste water. 这些管子是用来运送废水的。 2. replace; take the place of; in place of; take place replace sb. / sth.= take the place of sb. / sth. = take one’s place “代替……(的位置)”;take one’s place也有“就座;入席;各就各位”的意思,与take one’s seat 同义;in place of是介词短语,也是“替代”的意思;take place 意思为“发生”。如: The gate was broken so we replaced it with a new one. 这门坏了,我们用新的来代替它了。 Plastics are taking the place of wood, metal and glass for many uses. 塑料正在许多使用场合代替木材、金属和玻璃。 We Chinese use chopsticks in place of knives and forks. 我们中国人用筷子而不用刀叉。 Huge changes have taken place in China. 中国发生了巨大的变化。 As the warm air rises, cooler air takes its place. 热空气上升时,冷空气便占据它的位置。 3. foolish; silly; stupid foolish 常指人“无头脑;缺乏常识;不机智”,其反义词是wise。如: It is foolish of them to quarrel like that. 他们那样争吵太不明智了。 silly常指“傻;低能的;糊涂的;无智慧的”,多用于指小孩。如: How silly of you to do that!你干那事多傻啊! stupid指“迟钝的;笨拙的”,一般用于指人,也可以指行为、事物,反义词是clever。如: Don’t be stupid enough to believe that. 不要那么傻去相信那种事。 I wish I had your brains, but I'm too stupid. 我太笨了,我要是有你的脑瓜该多好啊!
