在英语中，表示否定的方式很多，使用否定词not是其中最常见、也是用法最复杂的一种。弄清楚not在句中的位置和所否定的范围，对正确表达和理解句义都有重要的意义。

　　一、not在句中的基本位置

　　not的位置一般在be动词、助动词或情态动词之后，行为动词之前。常以n't的形式与这些缩写成一个词，也可写成两个词。can的否定形式可写成can't / cannot / can not。例如：

　　(1) He is not / isn't a student.

　　(2) Mathilde didn't find her lost necklace.

　　(3) We can't finish so much work in so little time.

　　另外，need和dare作实义动词还是作情态动词，会直接影响not在句中的位置变化。例如：

　　(4) He dare not go near to Tom's neighbourhood in the day time.

　　(dare情态动词，not直接放在dare之后)

　　(5) I did not dare to move without permission.

　　(dare实义动词，not和助动词连用)

　　二、不定式的否定

　　先比较下列各句：

　　(1) I haven't yet decided where to go. 我还没有决定上哪去。

　　I have decided not to go. 我已经决定不去了。

　　(2) Don't tell him to wait for me. 别叫他等我。

　　Tell him not to wait for me. 叫他别等我。

　　(3) I didn't pretend to know anything about it. 我并不假装对此有所了解。

　　I pretended not to know anything about it. 我假装对此一无所知。

　　从以上诸例可以看出，否定词not的位置一般是紧放在所否定的成分之前。分组例句的第一句表示对全句的否定；第二句表示对不定式的否定。对不定式的否定要把not放在不定式之前。再如：

　　You'd better make your son not play football in the street.

　　三、分词、动名词的否定

　　分词、动名词的否定是在其前加not，如not knowing, not having received, not having been given等。例如：

　　(1) Not wanting to continue my service in the plant, I joined the army.

　　(2) The doctor, not wanting to make the patient nervous, didn't explain the seriousness of his illness.

　　(3) Tom's not passing the exam made his father very angry.

　　四、不完全否定(部分否定)

　　not与all, both, every, many, always, often等搭配使用时，表示部分否定，意为“并非都是”或“不是每个都是”等。例如：

　　(1) Both of them are not students. 他们两个不都是学生。

　　(2) All is not gold that glitters. 发光的不都是金子。

　　(3) All the students don't agree to the plan. (=Not all the studnts agree to the plan.) 并非所有的学生都同意这项计划。

　　all—not——结构和not all——结构意义相同，但后者明了易懂。要表示完全否定，则要用no, none, neither等。如说“没有一个学生同意这项计划”，应译成：

　　None of the students agrees to the plan.

　　五、否定前移

　　英语中有些动词，如think, believe, suppose, expect等后接宾语从句，如宾语从句表示否定意义，但在形式上应该否定前面的主句。例如：

　　I don't suppose it will take long, will it? 我看用不了多大会儿。

　　We don't think you have to worry about your parents. 我们认为你不必为父母担扰。
