谚语是人类智慧的结晶，是富于色彩的语言形式。英语谚语反映了英语民族的文化特点，它既有民间流传的谚语，又有来自《圣经》的、来自莎士比亚作品的和来自《伊索寓言》的，还有很多外来谚语。英语谚语中有许多有趣的有关动物的谚语，如：

　　1. bird

　　(1) Kill two birds with one stone. 一箭双雕；一举两得。

　　(2) A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. 双鸟在林不如一鸟在手。

　　(3) Birds of a feather flock together. 物以类聚，人以群分。

　　(4) It's an ill bird that fouls its own nest. 家丑不可外扬。

　　(5) Fine feathers make fine birds. 人要衣装，马要鞍。

　　(6) A bird is known by its note and a man by his talk. 听音识鸟，闻言识人。

　　2. cat

　　(1) A cat has nine lives. 猫有九条命；吉人天相。

　　(2) Cats hide their claws. 知人知面不知心。

　　3. crow

　　A crow is never the whiter for washing herself often. 江山易改，本性难移。

　　4. dog

　　(1) A staff is quickly found to beat a dog with. 欲加之罪，何患无辞。

　　(2) Love me, love my dog. 爱屋及乌.

　　(3) Let sleeping dogs lie. 勿惹是生非。

　　5. frog

　　The frog in the well knows nothing of the great ocean. 井底之蛙，不知大海。

　　6. fish

　　(1) Never offer to teach fish to swim. 不要班门弄斧。

　　(2) Go to the sea, if you would fish well. 不入虎穴，焉得虎子。

　　7. sheep

　　If one sheep leaps over the ditch, all the rest will follow. 榜样的力量是无穷的。
