英语中有许多名词可用作动词,使句子形象生动,富于口语化。这也是当代英语发展的一种趋向,需要学习者自己去注意及总结。本文就《大学英语(修订本)》中出现的一些名词,举例说明他们用作动词时的意义。

　　1. Don't baby your child. 不要娇惯孩子。

　　baby=spoil

　　2. Bus trays to Dishroom. 请把盘子送往洗涤室。

　　bus=transport

　　3. Thumb through any dictionary, and you will see pages of words followed by definition.翻阅任何一本词典,你都可看到每页上的词汇后面均有解释。

　　thumb=look

　　4. I'd like to book three seats for tonight's concert. 我想预定今晚音乐会的三个座位 。

　　book=buy (a ticket) in advance

　　5. The chairman will now address to the meeting. 现在由主席向与会者讲话。

　　address=make a speech to, especially formally

　　6. His father booted him out of the house. 他父亲把他从家里赶了出去。

　　boot=throw sb. out by force

　　7. He's always bossing his wife about. 他总是对妻子呼来唤去的。

　　boss=give orders to sb. in an overbearing way

　　8. The escaped prisoner was cornered at last. 逃犯最后走投无路了。

　　corner=get sb. into a position from which it is hard to escape

　　9. Your behavior disgraces us all. 你的行为使我们大家很丢脸。

　　disgrace=bring disgrace on, be a disgrace to

　　10. Don't disorder my papers. 别把我的证件弄乱。

　　disorder=disturb the order of sth.

　　11. I glimpsed Xiao Wang between the half-drawn curtains. 我从半掩的窗帘缝隙中瞥见了小王。

　　glimpse=get a quick look at sb.

　　12. I don't want to influence you either way, so I won't tell you my opinion. 我不想对你有任何影响,所以我不告诉你我的看法。

　　influence=have an effect on sb. or sth.

　　13. We must try and limit our expenditure. 我们必须设法限制我们的开支。

　　limit=set a limit or limits to sb. or sth., restrict sb. or sth.

　　14. The computer has been programmed. 计算机已输入了程序指令。

　　program=instruct a computer to do sth. by putting a program into it

　　15. My mother is spooning sugar from the packet into a bowl. 我妈妈正把糖从袋子中舀到糖罐里。

　　spoon=lift and move sth. with a spoon in the specified way or direction

　　16. People were streaming out of the station. 人们涌出了车站。

　　stream=flow or move as a stream

　　17. He is vacationing in the countryside. 他正在乡村度假。

　　vacation=have a holiday at/in

　　18. He intends to voyage across the Indian Ocean. 他打算横跨印度洋。

　　voyage=travel

　　19. She is outdoors gardening every afternoon. 她每天下午都在户外搞园艺。

　　garden=cultivate a garden

　　20. He patterns himself upon his father. 他模仿他的父亲。

　　pattern=imitate sb.
