9. 在家难免要做家务,"家务"在英语中是housework,是指家里的日常工作,如那些定期要做的零碎活,包括打扫房间、洗碗刷盘子、洗衣服等等,在英语中,做木活、园艺活、修管道,以及洗车等等并不属于housework范围。由于篇幅所限,这里我们不具体谈做哪种家务活,而就我们统称的做家务来谈谈这个话题。平时所见的标准用语有:①do housework 如:It takes me all day on Sundays to do my housework; We are busy doing housework now and cannot visit you; I can't get children to help me do the housework.② clean up 这个短语有彻底清扫之意,指的是把房间里能整理清扫的摆设、家具都要清扫一遍, 如:Clean up the kitchen/dining room/bedroom.以下是笔者搜集的几个习惯用语。

　　1) spruce up 如:Have you spruced up the bathroom? spruce当名词讲时是"云杉"的意思,是一种浓密针叶状木本植物,但在这里spruce up 是clean up之意,也就是"清扫、打扫"的意思,再如:He spruced up the chairs with new slipcovers. spruce up 由"清扫"又可引申为"打扮、装扮"的意思。如:He spruced himself up for the interview.

　　2) straighten up 如:Straighten up your room. 这句话的意思是"put your room in order",即"把自己的房间收拾一下"。再如:Please straighten up the living room.这里需要说明的是 straighten up 当 "清理、整理"讲,完全是一种习惯用语,因为我们知道 straighten up 本意是 (cause something to)become straight 或 make one's body upright也就是"变直、挺直"的意思,很多词典都没有提到这个词有上面习惯用语中的意思,但外教的解释是:"I don't know why it means 'clean up', but we can frequently use in that way."
