  11. An invisible border divides those arguing for computers in the classroom on the behalf of students career prospects and those arguing for computers in the classroom for broader reasons of radical educational reform.

  【译文】 对于计算机课堂教学,人们在观点上存在着一条无形的界线:有人认为应从学生的就业前景来考虑这一问题,另一些人认为应从推行根本教育改革方面更加全面地考虑计算机进入教室这一问题。

  【析句】 此句在结构上是个简单句,复杂之处在于divides的宾语是两个those,而且各自跟了一个现在分词短语,一是arguing for computers in the classroom on the behalf of students' career prospects,一是arguing for computers in the classroom for broader reasons of radical educational reform。两个宾语代表了两种不同的观点。

  【讲词】 career prospects指就业前景,当然这个词组也可以表示“职业前景”,即一个人在事业上的发展。

  radical意为“激进的;根本的”,也可指“激进分子”。radical faults in the design(设计中的基本错误)。A radical is a man with both feet firmly planted in the air. (激进分子就是不讲实际的人。)

  12. An education that aims at getting a student a certain kind of job is a technical education,justified for reasons radically different from why education is universally required by law.

  【译文】 旨在使学生胜任某种工作的教育是职业教育,它存在的理由与法律所规定的普及教育之间有很大差别。

  【析句】 这个句子的主语是An education,后面that引导的从句既是主语的定语,表语是a technical education。过去分词justified引导的短语修饰a technical education,radically different from why education is universally required by law是reasons的后置定语。

  【讲词】 justify意为“证明……是正当的”。Is he justified in all his actions?(他的这许多行为是正当的吗?)The course of events fully justifies our views.(事情的发展完全证明我们的意见是正确的。)

  radically表示“根本地”。radical意为“根本的,基本的,激进的”。

  require意为“要求,需要”。I require two children to help me.(我需要两个孩子来帮忙。)The rules require us all to be present.(按规定我们都要到场。)

  13. Rather,we have a certain conception of the American citizen,a character who is incomplete if he cannot competently assess how his livelihood and happiness are affected by things outside of himself.

  【译文】 相反,我们应该体现美国公民的某种观念,如果他无法准确判断自身的生活和幸福是如何受到外界影响的,他的公民特征就是不完整的。

  【析句】 这个句子的难点在于理解a certain conception of the American citizen,即a character… outside of himself。这里的a character是指the American citizen,其后是一个who引导的定语从句;该定语从句是主从复合句,其中主句是who is incomplete,if引导条件从句,这个条件从句中的谓语动词access跟了一个how引导的宾语从句。

  【讲词】 assess意为“评估,评价”。The annual income of school teachers in this place was assessed at $900.(这地方的学校教师的年收入为900美元。)Damages were assessed at 1000 RMB.(损失估计达一千元人民币。)

  affect意为“影响”。You should be aware of the fact that smoking affects health.(你应该清楚吸烟有害健康。)He was deeply affected by my words.(他听了我的话很受感动。)注意affected的意思是“假装的,造作的”。She showed an affected interest in our subject.(她假装对我们的课题感兴趣。)

  14. But this was not always the case; before it was legally required for all children to attend school until a certain age,it was widely accepted that some were just not equipped by nature to pursue this kind of education.

  【译文】 但是情况并不总是如此。在法律要求所有儿童在一定年龄之前必须上学,人们普遍认为有些儿童天生就不适合接受这种教育。

  【析句】 全句由两个分句组成,前后用分号隔开。在第二个分句的主句中,it是形式主语,真正的主语是some were just not equipped by nature to pursue this kind of education。it was widely accepted意为“人们普遍认为”。

  【讲词】 pursue意为“追赶,追踪,追击,继续,从事”。She pursued the study of English for five years.(她坚持学了五年英语。)The ship continued to pursue a northern course.(船只继续向北航行。)

  attend意为“出席,参加;照顾;注意;伴随”。The speech was attended with wild applause.(听众对演讲报以热烈的掌声。)Well attend to that problem later.(我们稍后会关注那个问题。)

  15. Besides,this is unlikely to produce the needed number of every kind of professional in a country as large as ours and where the economy is spread over so many states and involves so many international corporations.

  【译文】 此外,在我们这么大的一个国家里,经济延展到这么多的州,涉及这么多的国际公司,因而要培养出所需数量的各类专业人员是不太可能的。

  【析句】 这里的主语this指的是前面所说的professional training,后面不定式短语中动词produce的宾语是professional,前面的成分是修饰这个词的短语,接着是地点状语,其中country带了两个修饰成分,前一个是形容词性的短语as large as ours,后一个是where引导的定语从句,这个从句的主语the economy有两个谓语动词:is和involves,后面都用了相似的结构so many,表示强调。

  【讲词】 needed意为“所需的”。Select this link to print a checklist of the documents needed.(选择这一链接,然后打印所需的文件。)另外,注意spread的过去式和过去分词与原形一样。

  spread除了表示“伸展;展开;传播”,也可表示“延伸;延长”。This is a prescribed course which spreads over two semesters.(这是一门需要两个学期才能学完的必修课。)注意spread的过去式和过去分词都是spread。

  16. But,for a small group of students,professional training might be the way to go since well-developed skills,all other factors being equal,can be the difference between having a job and not.

  【译文】 但是对少数学生而言,职业培训也许是可取之路,因为在其他因素相同的情况下,熟练的技能是能否得到工作的关键。

  【析句】 该句是个主从复合句,前面for引导的短语表示的是对象,注意主句的表语the way跟了一个不定式to go,从句由since引导,这个从句的主干结构是skills… can be the difference,其中difference带了一个介词短语between… and…,and后面的not可以补足为not having a job。all other factors being equal是一个独立主格结构,在本句中作为插入短语,起到限制的作用。

  【讲词】 factor意为“因素”。Her friendly manner is an important factor in her rapid success.(待人友好是她迅速获得成功的重要因素。)They take family background seriously,which is the most important factor to earn others respect.(他们非常重视家庭背景,认为这是赢得相互尊重的最重要因素。
