具体提问方式通常为: ①What is the passage mainly about?(2001年全真考研题) ②Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?(2000年全真考研题) ③From the passage we learn that . (1997年全真考研题) ④The best title for this passage could be .(1997年全真考研题) ⑤The key point of the passage is that .(1994年、1991年全真考研题) ⑥The passage is mainly about . (1993年、1991年全真考研题) ⑦The article is written to explain . (1992年全真考研题) ⑧The purpose of this passage is . Example (1) No single adjective is adequate to describe the size of the blue whale, and few people realize how it compares with other mammals. By any standard,it is the largest creature known to man. To be specific, one of its fins, called a fluke, would fill the cargo space of the average dump truck.Although its skull is the size and weight of a car,its brain is only the size of a carburetor. Its heart is so large that five strong men would be needed to lift it,while its skin could be used as a tarpaulin to cover half a football field. Every person in Boston could be supplied with a whaleburger, and a pretty good one, too, from the meat of one blue whale. Combine the weights of 100 horses,100 dairy cows, and 100 Indian elephants and you would arrive at the weight of one female blue whale. Fortunately for the whale, its watery environment has protected it from the extinction suffered by the dinosaur millions of years ago. Which sentence best expresses the main idea? A.Although the blue whale is enormous, its brain is very small. B.The meat of the blue whale is one of the tastiest meats known to man. C.Female blue whales are larger than males. D.The blue whale is one of natures largest and most fascinating wonders. Example (2) By the time the first European travelers on the American continent began to record some of their observations about Indians, the Cherokee people had developed an advanced culture that probably was exceeded only by the civilized tribes of the Southwest:Mayan and Aztec groups. The social structures of the Cherokee people consisted of a form of clan kinship in which there were seven recognized clans. All members of a clan were considered blood brothers and sisters and were bound by honor to defend any member of that clan from wrong. Each clan, the Bird,Paint,Deer,Wolf,Blue,Long Hair, and Wild Potato was represented in the civil council by a counselor or counselors. The chief of the tribe was selected from one of these clans and did not inherit his office from his kinsmen. Actually, there were two chiefs,a Peace chief and a War chief. The Peace chief served when the tribe was at peace, but the minute war was declared, the War chief was in command. Select the statement which best expresses the main idea of the paragraph. A.The Cherokee chief was different in war time than in peace time. B.Before the arrival of the Europeans the Cherokees had developed a wellorganized society. C.The Mayans and the Aztecs were part of the Cherokee tribe. D.Several Indian cultures had developed advanced civilizations before Europeans arrived. Example (3) What accounts for the great outburst of major inventions in early America-breakthroughs such as the telegraph, the steamboat and the weaving machine?Among the many shaping factors, I would single out the countrys excellent elementary schools; a labor force that welcomed the new technology; the practice of giving premiums to inventors; and above all the American genius for nonverbal,“spatial”thinking about things technological. Why mention the elementary schools? Because thanks to these schools our early mechanics, especially in the New England and Middle Atlantic states, were generally literate and at home in arithmetic and in some aspects of geometry and trigonometry. Acute foreign observers related American adaptiveness and inventiveness to this educational advantage. As a member of a British commission visiting here in1953 reported,“With a mind prepared by thorough school discipline, the American boy develops rapidlysintosthe skilled workman.” A further stimulus to invention came from the“premium”system, which preceded our patent system and for years ran parallel with it. This approach, originated abroad, offered investors medals, cash prizes and other incentives. In the United States, multitudes of premiums for new devices were awarded atcountry fairs and at the industrial fairs in major cities. Americans flocked to these fairs to admire the new machines and thus to renew their faith in the beneficence of technological advance. Given this optimistic approach to technological innovation, the American worker took readily to that special kind of nonverbal thinking required in mechanical technology. As Eugene Ferguson has pointed out,“A technologist thinks about objects that cannot be reduced to unambiguous verbal descriptions; they are dealt with in his mind by a visual, nonverbal process…The designer and the inventor…are able to assemble and manipulate in their minds devices that as yet do not exist.” This nonverbal“spatial”thinking can be just as creative as painting and writing. Robert Fulton once wrote,“The mechanic should sit down among levers, screws, wedges, wheels, etc., like a poet among the letters of the alphabet, considering them as an exhibition of his thoughts, in which a new arrangement transmits a new idea.” When all these shaping forces-schools, open attitudes, the premium system, a genius for spatial thinking-interacted with one another on the rich U.S.mainland, they produced that American characteristic emulation. Today that word implies mere imitation. But in earlier times it meant a friendly but competitive striving for fame and excellence. The best title for this passage might be . A.Inventive Mind B.Effective Schooling C.Ways of Thinking D.Outpouring of Inventions 本篇的主题句是开篇的第一句“What accounts for the great outburst of major inventions in early America…?”文章第二段就回答了这个问题,指出有四个方面:“excellentelementary schools;a labour force that welcomed the new technology;the practiceof giving premiums to inventors;and above all the American genius for nonverbal,“spatial”thinking about things technological”,后边几段都是围绕这一主题展开。 进行了详细的阐述,在所列举的四种解释中,尤其强调了最后一种,因此答案选A项,即:“Inventive mind accounts for the great outburst of major inventions…”。 The American economic system is organized around a basically privateenterprise, marketoriented economy in which consumers largely determine what shall be produced by spending their money in the marketplace for those goods and services that they want most.Private businessmen, striving to make profits, produce these goods and services in competition with other businessmen;and the profit motive, operating under competitive pressures, largely determines how these goods and services are produced. Thus,in the American economic system it is the demand of individual consumers, coupled with the desire of businessmen to maximize profits and the desire of individuals to maximize their incomes, that together determine what shall be produced and how resources are used to produce it. An important factor in a marketoriented economy is the mechanism by which consumer demands can be expressed and responded to by producers. In the American economy, this mechanism is provided by a price system,a process in which prices rise and fall in response to relative demands of consumers and supplies offered by sellerproducers. If the product is in short supply relative to the demand, the price will be bid up and some consumers will be eliminated from the market. If,on the other hand, producing more of a commodity results in reducing its cost, this will tend to increase the supply offered by sellerproducers, which in turn will lower the price and permit more consumers to buy the product. Thus, price is the regulating mechanism in the American economic system. The important factor in a privateenterprise economy is that individuals are allowed to own productive resources (private property ),and they are permitted to hire labor, gain control over natural resources, and produce goods and services for sale at a profit. In the American economy, the concept of private property embraces not only the ownership of productive resources but also certain rights, including the right to determine the price of a product or to make a free contract with another private individual. 54. The passage is mainly about. A.how American goods are produced B.how American consumers buy their goods C.how American economic system works D.how American businessmen make their profits 54C文章的第一句就表明了这篇文章的主题,即:The American economic system is organized around a basically…。 One hundred and thirteen million Americans have at least one bankissued creditcard. They give their owners automatic credit on stores, restaurants, and hotels,at home, across the country, and even abroad, and they make many banking services available as well.More and more of these credit cards can be read automatically, making it possible to withdraw or deposit money in scattered locations, whether ornot the local branch bank is open. For many of us the“cashless society”is not on the horizon-its already here. While computers offer these conveniences to consumers, they have many advantages for sellers too.Electronic cash registers can do much more than simply ring up sales. They can keep a wide range of records, including who sold what, when, and to whom. This information allows businessmen to keep track of their list of goods by showing which items are being sold and how fast they are moving.Decisions to reorder or return goods to suppliers can then be made.At the same time these computers record which hours are busiest and which employees are the most efficient, allowing personnel and staffing assignments to be made accordingly. And they also identify preferred customers for promotional campaigns.Computers are relied on bymanufacturers for similar reasons.Computeranalyzed marketing reports can helpto decide which products to emphasize now, which to develop for the future, and which to drop.Computers keep track of goods in stock,of raw materials on hand, andeven of the production process itself. Numerous other commercial enterprises, from theaters to magazine publishers, from gas and electric utilities to milk processors, bring better and more efficient services to consumers through the use of computer. 58.What is this passage mainly about? A.Approaches to the commercial use of computers. B.Conveniences brought about by computers in business. C.Significance of automation in commercial enterprises. D.Advantages of credit cards in business. Most growing plants contain much more water than all other materials combined. C. R. Darnes has suggested that it is as proper to term the plant a water structure as to call a house composed mainly of brick a brick building. Certain it is all essential processes of plant growth and development occur in water. The mineral elements from the soil that are usable by the plant must be dissolved in the soil solution before they can be takensintosthe root. They are carried to all parts of the growing plant and are builtsintosessential plant material from which the plant body is mainly built. Actively growing plant parts are generally 75 to90 percent water. Structural parts of plants, such as woody stems no longer actively growing, may have much less water than growing tissues. The actual amount of water in the plant at one time, however, is only a very small part of what passes through it during its development. The processes of photosynthesis, by which carbon dioxide and water are combined-in the presence of chlorophyll(叶绿素)and with energy derived from light-to form sugars, require that carbon dioxide from the air enter the plant. This occurs mainly in the leaves. The leaf surface is not solid but contains great numbers of minute openings, through which the carbon dioxide enters. The same structure that permits the one gas to enter the leaf, however, permits another gas-water vapor-to be lost fromit. Since carbon dioxide is present in the air only in trace quantities(3to 4 parts in 10 000 parts of air) and water vapor is near saturation in the air spaces within the leaf(at 80°F, saturated air would contain about 186 parts of watervapor in 10 000 parts of air), the total amount of water vapor lost is many times the carbon dioxide intake. Actually, because of wind and other factors, the loss of water in proportion to carbon dioxide intake may be even greater than therelative concentrations of the two gases. Also, not all of the carbon dioxide that enters the leafs synthesizedsintoscarbonhydrate(碳水化合物). 43.The second paragraph uses facts to develop the essential idea that. A.a plant efficiently utilizes most of the water it absorbs B.carbon dioxide is the essential substance needed for plant development C.a plant needs more water than is found in its composition D.the stronger the wind, the more the water vapor loss 43.C文中第二段第一句说:“植物在任何特定时期的含水量都只是其生长过程中总量的一小部分”与C答案相符合。 2. In such a changing, complex society formerly simple solutions to informational needs become complicated. Many oflifesproblems which were solved by asking family members, friends or colleagues are beyond the capability of the extended family to resolve.swheresto turn for expert information and how to determine which expert advice to accept are questions facing many people today. In addition to this, there is the growing mobility of people since World WarⅡ. As families move away from their stable community, their friends of many years, their extended family relationships, the informal flow of information is cut off,and with it the confidence that information will be available when needed and will be trustworthy and reliable. The almost unconscious flow of information about the simplest aspects of living can be cut off. Thus, things once learned subconsciously through the casual communications of the extended family must be consciously learned. Adding to societal changes today is an enormous stockpile of information. The individual now has more information available than any generation, and the task of finding that one piece of information relevant to his or her specific problem iscomplicated, timeconsuming and sometimes even overwhelming. Coupled with the growing quantity of information is the development of technologies which enable the storage and delivery of more information with greater speed to more locations than has ever been possible before. Computer technology makes it possible to store vast amounts of data in machinereadable files, and to program computers to locate specific information. Telecommunications developments enable the sending of messages via television, radio, and very shortly electronic mail to bombard people with multitudes of messages. Satellites have extended thepower of communications to report events at the instant of occurrence. Expertise can be shared worldwide through teleconferencing, and problems in dispute can be settled without the participants leaving their homes and/or jobs to travel toa distant conference site. Technology has facilitated the sharing of information and the storage and delivery of information, thus making more information available to more people. In this world of change and complexity, the need for information is of greatest importance. Those people who have accurate, reliable uptodate information tosolve the daytoday problems, the critical problems of their business, social and family life, will survive and succeed.“Knowledge is power”may well be the truest saying and access to information may be the most critical requirement of all people. 62.We can learn from the last paragraph that . A.it is necessary to obtain as much knowledge as possible B.people should make the best use of the information accessible C.we should realize the importance of accumulating information D.it is of vital importance to acquire needed information efficiently 62.D本题提问的是从文章最后一段中得知什么,也就是最后一段的主题是什么。
