The abandoned city and temple ruins are all that remain of the early and great civilization. For hundreds of years, Angkor was the magnificent capital of the ancient Khmer Empire, which ruled much of Southeast Asia. The ruins of Angkor are also symbolic of Cambodia today—of a once peaceful and fertile land ruined by years of war. Angkor is an ancient city, now in ruins, situated just north of the western end of the Tonle Sap(Great Lake) in the north central part of Cambodia. The site is famous for the remains of Khmer buildings, the two principal ones being the walled city or Angkor Thom, with its Bayon temple, and Angkor Wat, a magnificent temple about a mile distant. Angkor Wat dates from the first half of the 12th century A. D. and Angkor Thom from late in the same century. Visitors are impressed by the great size of the buildings as well as by the richness and excellent quality of the sculptures. The ruins, almost covered by tropical forest, were unknown until 1858— 1860, when the site was rediscovered by A. H. Mouhot, a French naturalist. The jungle has now been cleared from most of the remains, and new roads to the site have been constructed. The road from Phnom Penh to Angkor is fair, and the journey takes about five hours by car.
