"一……就"的表达法在翻译时灵活多变,要想掌握并运用好它就必须勤学、勤记、勤归纳。笔者将"一……就"英译小结如下:

　　1. never...but, but 后接从句。

　　I never see him but I think of my brother. 我一看见他就想起我弟弟。

　　It never rains but it pours. 不雨则已,一雨倾盆。

　　2. never(no, not)...without, without后接名词或动名词。

　　They never meet without quarrelling. 他们一见面就是争吵。

　　There is no smoke without fire. 无风不起浪。(谚语)

　　3. hardly...when(before); scarcely...when(before); barely...when(before); no sooner...than,如 hardly,scarcely, barely, no sooner置于句首就须用倒装结构。

　　I had hardly closed my eyes when the telephone rang.

　　Hardly had I closed my eyes when the telephone rang. 我刚合上眼电话铃就响了。

　　They had no sooner finished a job than the new task came.

　　No sooner had they finished a job than the new task came. 他们刚结束一项工作,新任务就来了。

　　Scarcely had we gone out when it started to snow. 我们刚一出去就开始下雪。

　　4. as soon as...

　　Let us start as soon as he comes. 他一来我们就开始。

　　The machine starts as soon as the button is pressed. 一按按钮,机器就开动起来。

　　5. the moment; the instant; the minute; the second, 名词词组。

　　The minute the criminal arrived at the station, he was arrested by the police. 罪犯一到车站就被警察逮捕了。

　　I loved you the second I saw you. 我一见到你就爱上了你。

　　The instant I saw him I recognized him. 我一看见他就认出了他。

　　I'll tell you the moment I get the final result. 我一得到最后结果就告诉你。

　　6. instantly; immediately; directly, 副词。

　　I'll telephone you directly I reach the destination. 我一到目的地就给你打电话。

　　Please tell me immediately you have any news. 一有消息请立即告诉我。

　　He started instantly he heard the report. 他一听到报告就动身了。

　　7. 介词on+动名词

　　On hearing the news, she fainted. 一听到消息,她就晕过去了。

　　On entering the room, he found his friends dancing in high spirits. 一进屋,他就发现他的朋友们在愉快地跳舞。

　　8. once, 连词

　　Once they stand up and become masters of their own fate, the working people can accomplish miracles. 劳动人民一旦站起来作了自己命运的主人,就能创造奇迹。

　　Once you hesitate, you are lost. 你一踌躇,就完蛋了。
