  Passage 1

The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge.① The dark night air was cold and slightly wet, and the street lamp gave little light.

Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the pavement (人

When he reached the middle of the bridge he thought he could hear someone

coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound

continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, feel

ing shame at having acted so foolishly. There was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.

Just then, he heard short, quick steps closely behind him. By the time he reache

d the other side of the bridge, he could almost feel someone at his heels (紧跟

He turned round and there stood a man in a large overcoat. A hat was pull

ed down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen. Frank said some

thing about the weather, trying to sound friendly and calm. The man did not answer but asked rudely where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in th

e distance and the stranger continued his way.

Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour.

He knew that the people who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he began following the stranger quickly and quietly. The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out.② After about half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground at the other side.

Now Frank realized what was going to happen. He walked quickly and silently across the street towards a telephone box on the corner.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary (暂时的). This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation — for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new p

lace. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as head

aches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.

The third kind of loneliness is the most serious. Unlike the second type, chroni

c (长期的) loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific (特

别的) cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing

and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people thi

nk there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.①

Psychologists (心理学家) are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons. They are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illnesses such as heart disease.

② While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of l

  Passage 3

Health officials are worried about a flu (流感). But this isn't the same kind of flu that might have kept you out of school last week. It's the bird flu, which has spread to 10 Asian countries.

The disease affects birds such as chickens and ducks, and can also spread to humans. So far, only people who have handled chickens have been infected (感染). Although there is no sign of the disease spreading from human to human, experts are not ruling out that possibility.

The disease first infected humans in Hong Kong in 1997, but appeared in Italy over 100 years ago. This year, at least 10 people have died from the disease, and health experts fear it could become worse. If the virus (病毒) continues to grow at a fast rate, it could become a bigger problem than SARS, which used to kill about 800 people last year.

To prevent the situation from becoming worse, infected chickens and ducks throughout Asia are being killed. China has already killed tens of thousands of birds. Scientists are also working as hard as they can to create a vaccine (疫苗) to protect people, but it will probably not be ready for at least another six months.

“We have a window of opportunity here to deal with this disease,①” said Dr. Klaus Stohr of the World Health Organization. “With SARS we said we wanted to put things back in a box;② here we want to keep things in the box. It hasnt come out yet. We have a good chance of controlling this.”

  注释

  ………………………………

① We have a window of opportunity here to deal with this disease.

② With SARS we said we wanted to put things

  back in a box.

  A. A disease suffered by animals.

  B. A disease suffered by birds.

  C. A disease suffered by animals and humans.

  D. A disease suffered by birds and humans.

  2. Which of the following statements is TRUE to the fact?

  A. The bird flu only appeared in Asia.

  B. The bird flu is not able to spread between humans like SARS.

  C. The bird flu first appeared in Hong Kong.

  D. The bird flu could be more serious than SARS.

  3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

  A. The bird flu has developed into a serious problem which is beyond peoples control.

  B. The bird flu has caused as bad an effect to humans as SARS.

  C. Now people have developed ways to deal with the disease of the bird flu.

  D. People are quite sure about bringing the bird flu into control.
