  Passage 1

Laptop(便携式)computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their work places. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are a part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110yearold college. The students with laptops will also have access (通道) to the Internet. In addition,① they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, the classmates, and their families.

However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with them at home, in a fastfood restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the laptop computers can connect students not only to the Internet, but also to libraries and other resources. State highereducation officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials also are testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff (职员) use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we're giving students a window on the world.② They can see everything and do everything.”

  Passage 2

One of the most exciting new types of train is the Maglev train. The Maglev train is very different from normal trains. It does not have any wheels. It uses magnetic (磁的) levitation (悬浮) to float on the rail. It can travel very fast — over 500 kilometres an hour. Train speeds of 552 km/h have been demonstrated (论证) by a fullsize maglev train in Japan, while in Germany a maglev train has run at 450 km/h. It is very quiet and it is very clean. It does not have any wheels or any parts that move.

  How does it work?

The secret is that it uses magnets (磁) in a new type of motor. Have you ever tried to push two magnets together? If you hold them one way, they attract each other. If you hold them the other way, they repel (排斥) each other. ①

The Maglev train uses magnets in the same way. The motor is a very big electromagnet (电磁体). An electromagnet is a magnet that only works when there is electricity. The electricity changes direction all the time and magnet changes from north to south. There are more electromagnets on the rail and this pushes the train forward.

The train is fast, quiet and clean. Why dont we see it everywhere now? Part of the answer is that the train can only take people. It cannot carry very heavy things. Also, because it goes so fast, the rail must be very straight. This makes it difficult to use it in places where there are a lot of hills. But the real answer is that it is very expensive to build. A long rail of electromagnets costs a lot of money. It also uses a lot of electricity. We need to find a cheaper, cleaner way to make electricity if we want to see “The Flying Train”② in our towns and cities.

  注释

  ………………………………

① If you hold them one way, they attract each other. If you hold them the other way, they repel each other.

② the Flying Train = the magnetic train that floats on the rail

  Passage 3

The most frightening words in the English language are, “Our computer is down.” You hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, “Im sorry, I can't sell you a ticket. Our computer is down.”

“If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket.”

“I can't write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so.”

I looked down the counter and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, “What do you do?”

“We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not.”

“So when it goes down, you go down with it.”①

  “Thats right, sir.”

“How long will the computer be down?” I wanted to know.

“I have no idea. Sometimes it's down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There is no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it's down, it won't answer us.”

After the girl told me they had no backup (备用的) computer, I said, “Let's forget the computer.② What about your planes? They're still flying, aren't they?”

“I can't tell without asking the computer.”

“Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot(飞行员)if he's flying to Washington.” I suggested.

“I wouldn't know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn't take you if you didn't have a ticket.”

“Is there any other airline flying to Washington within the next few hours?”

“I don't know,” she said, pointing at the dark screen.

  “Only ‘IT knows.‘IT can't tell me.”

By this time there were quite a few people standing in line. The words soon spread to travelers that the computer was down. Some people left, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage.
