现行高一英语教材上册第12单元有这样一句话:

　　If only they could find a way to get to the room, or whatever it was, behind the wall. (Student's Book 1A, P.83)

　　教师用书提供的翻译为:要是他们能找到一条通道进入墙后的那个房间,或无论什么地方,该有多好啊!(Teacher's Book, P.273)

　　笔者觉得,句中的or whatever it was不是"或无论什么地方"之意。

　　or whatever (it is/was)是一种习惯用法。or whatever (infml) or any other(s) of a similar type或其他类似的事物:Take any sport-basketball, ice hockey, swimming or whatever.要参加体育活动--篮球、冰球、游泳之类的活动。(《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》P. 1729)buffalo or rhinoceros or whatever水牛或犀牛，或诸如此类。(《新英汉词典》P.1606)

　　or whatever大致有如下几种用法：

　　一、 表示……之类的东西或事情，可用or whatever (it is/was called)。例如：

　　FY5 53 And every time you want any potatoes you go and open the clamp or the pit or whatever it was called and take some out and seal it up again and that's how we used to store them. 每当你想要马铃薯时，你就去挖开堆或坑之类的地方，取出几个马铃薯，然后再次封掉它，我们过去常常是这样储藏马铃薯的。

　　CH9 131 He glanced round again, but the Thing, the Beast, the Monster, or whatever it was, was hidden from his sight by the smoke it shot out as it galloped forward. 他再次看了一下四周，但是那件东西或猛兽或怪物或诸如此类的东西向前飞跑，喷射出烟雾，躲过了他的视线。

　　K4W 5287 He said: "The delivery came very quickly and so suddenly. Mrs Busuttil's recollection is the baby just fell out onto the table or whatever it was, she was lying on."他说："生产来得非常迅速、非常突然，Busuttil夫人的回忆是，婴儿就掉在她躺着的桌子之类的地方上。"

　　EVC 2959 Go and buy some curtains or whatever it is you want.去买你想要的窗帘之类的东西。

　　GOE 1965 Get that machine of yours or whatever it is, working now. 现在把你的机器之类的东西发动起来。

　　HSL 228 And that's because the third world is bigger than any other section whether you call it the first world or second world or whatever, and I think the first and second put together. 这是因为第三世界比其他任何部分都大，不管你称它第一世界或第二世界或诸如此类的部分，我认为第三世界比第一和第二世界加起来还大。

　　二、 要求对方干诸如……之类的事，可用or whatever it is you do。例如：

　　CEU 2130 Or computer, or whatever it is you do.或者做诸如计算之类的事。

　　HTU 1225 Now shut your eyes or whatever it is you do. 现在闭上眼睛或者做诸如此类的事。

　　三、 表示不明确的数量，也可用or whatever it is/was。例如：

　　JJD 329 Councillor came to a meeting and spoke for twenty minutes or whatever it was. 议员来参加一次会议，在会上讲了大约20分钟。

　　KCF 40 You hire it for a day or whatever it is. 你租用它大约一天时间。

　　因此，教材中的那句话应该翻译为：要是他们能找到一条通道进入墙后的房间之类的地方，该有多好啊！
