321 The only kind of charge thought to exist is that associated with protons and electrons.

322 To expand its terms of reference, the Fund has covered all aspects of the economic and social planning in connection with the research work.

323 Praise is almost a contagious virus in a classroom because if you can catch one child doing something good and if you can verbally commend that child in front of his or her peers,it’s going to spread like wildfire and the rest of the children are going to automatically do exactly what the model student is doing because they want the positive attention.

324 We have learned that air is a mixture of gases,of which oxygen, water vapor, and carbon dioxide are the most important for what they do.

325 There’re other accounts of flying objects which have been seen from the air or from the ground. And many of those who have told us about them are men like Captain Howard—men of sense and experience, men whose word can be trusted.

分析:这两个句子都含有较长的定语从句,第一个定语从句(which have been seen from the air from the ground)前面有两个名词,accounts和flying objects,仅仅根据语言一致性无法准确判断,可能会得出错误的译法。

326 Most of the Chinese companies that Microsoft has enlisted in the Venus project have the technology and resources to introduce such a product on their own. That they haven’t should in itself cast suspicion on Gates’reasoning.

Chinese companies.

327 To make the situation worse, there is as yet no sign that any slowing of the world’s population is in sight.Although the birth_rate has dropped in some nations, including the United States, the population of the world seems sure to pass six billion and perhaps even seven billion as the twenty_first century opens.

The food supply will not increase nearly enough to match this, which means that we are heading into a crisis in the matter of producing and marketing food.

328 Any intelligence test is a rough measure of a child’s capacity for learning, articularly for learning the kinds of things required in school. It does not measure character, social adjustment, physical endurance, manual skill,or artistic abilities. It is not supposed to it was not designed for that purpose. To criticize it for such failure is roughly comparable to criticizing a thermometer for not measuring wind velocity.(1992年)

To criticize it for…is roughly comparable to criticizing…。 这句话里代词it指的是上文的“any intelligence test”,“such failure”指的是上一句的It does not measure character,social adjustment…

329 There is no more difference, but there is just the same kind of difference, between the mental operations of a man of science and those of an ordinary person,as there is between the operations and methods of a baker or a butcher weighing out his goods in common scale, and the operations of a chemist in performing a difficult and complex analysis by means of his balance and finely graded weighs. It is not that the scale in the one case, and the balance in the other, differ in the principle of their construction or manner of working;but that the latter is a much finer apparatus and of course much more accurate in its measurement than the former.(1993年)

It is not that…;but that…。 A、B分别为两件事:A是the scale…and the balance…differ in…,B是the latter is…。 the latter,后者,the former,前者,显然分别对应上半句里的the scale in one case和the balance in the other。

330 Do animals have rights? This is how the question is usually put.It sounds like a useful,ground_clearing way to start.Actually,it isn’t because it assumes that there is an agreed account of human rights, which is something the world does not have.(1997年)

Actually,it isn’t because it assumes that…。这句话里it两次出现,意思是一致的,都是前指,即前文中的question(Do animals have rights?)。 后面which引导一个非限定性定语从句,修饰“an agreed account of human rights”。

331 Governments throughout the world act on the assumption that the welfare of their people depends largely on the economic strength and wealth of the community.Under modern conditions, this requires varying measures of centralized control and hence the help of specialized scientists such as economists and operational research experts.(2000年)

  结构分析:句子的框架是个简单句this requires A and hence(requires)B,under…conditions(在…

332 There will be television chat shows hosted by robots, and cars with pollution monitors that will disable them when they offend.(2001年)

  结构分析:句子的框架是个表将来状况的there be句型:There will be…,and…。 过去分词短语hosted by robots作定语修饰shows;that引导定语从句,修饰cars;when引导时间状语从句。

333 Pearson also predicts a breakthrough in computer human links.“By linking directly to our nervous system, computers could pick up what we feel and hopefully, simulate feeling too so that we can start to develop full sensory environments, rather like the holidays in Total Recall or the Star Trek holodeck,”he says. But that,Pearson points out,is only the start of man_machine integration:“It will be the beginning of the long process of integration that will ult

imately lead to a fully electronic human before the end of the next century.”(2001年)

Pearson points out…but that is only the start of man_machine integration;后面再紧跟一个直接引语。 Pearson points out是插入语。

334 For investors wondering whether they should dump their stocks because they need money,I have only this to say:if you need the money today, you should have sold years ago. That advice holds whether the market is up or down.

For investors wondering whether…,I have only this to say:…That advice holds…。 I have only this to say:…,介词短语for investors wondering whether they…作状语,其中wondering…because they need money这个存在分词短语作investors的后置定语;第二句中whether the market is up or down是宾语从句,作holds的宾语。两个指示代词this和that都指代同一个句子:if you need the money today, you should have sold years ago。

335 Some companies are finding that they can cut cost and leverage the most out of their staff and budgets if they partner with other companies that specialize in particular areas that they can’t do as well or as efficiently themselves.

Some companies are finding that they can cut…if they…。 在此从句中that specialize in particular areas是定语从句,修饰companies;that they can’t do… 句中的they,都指some companies。

336 Most tribal peoples survive in areas which traditionally have been marginal to business—the Arctic, the desert, tropical forests. It is their bad luck that in many cases these are unexploited mineral_ rich regions, which are now coming under pressure.

It is their bad luck that…these are unexploited mineral_rich regions,which are…。

337 No Englishman believes in working from book learning. He suspects all theories, philosophical or other. He suspects everything new and dislike it,unless he can be compelled by the force of circumstance to see that this new thing has advantages over the old.

He suspects everything new and dislike it,unless…。 it指代前面提到的everything new,以避免重复;the old指代与this new thing相对的the old thing。

338 Digital phones from one carrier—such as AT&T Wireless,Air_Touch Cellular or Sprint PCS—often do not work with others in the same area.Mark Lowenstein of Yankee Group,a Boston_based technology consulting firm, explains:“They offer their services on different spectrums that aren’t compatible.

Mark Lowenstein of Yankee Group,…,explains:“They offer their services on…”。a Boston_based technology consulting firm是Yankee Group的同位语。 AT&T Wireless,Air_ Touch Cellular or Sprint PCS,在句中翻译为“不同品牌的手机”。

339 Our past, then,as a whole is made manifest to us in its impulse;it is felt in the form of tendency, although only a small part of it is known in the form of idea. From this survival of the past it follows that consciousness cannot go through the same state twice. The circumstances may still be the same, but they will act no longer on the same person, since they fid him at a new moment of his history.

The circumstances may still be the same, but they will act no longer on the same person, since…。

340 Since the1970s,many computer_aided architectural programs have been commercially available. But historically, architects have resorted to small_scale physical models to provide a bird’s eye view of a building or of its interior. They are expensive to build but certainly cannot give an architect and his clients a true sense of the perspective, color, texture and shading that would be perceived by someone“walking”through the building under design.

They are expensive to build but certainly cannot give an architect and his clients a true sense…。 句尾that引导定语从句修饰the perspective, color, texture and shading。

341 Some experts believe such people could be particularly influenced by computer game—and that this may have been a cause of last year’s massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado.

Some experts believe…and that…。 前一个并列分句省略了that;后一个并列分句的主语this指代前句中的such people could be particularly influenced by computer game的内容。

342 Fortunately, the manufacturers that are developing these automated products understand that consumers don’t care how something works as much as they care that it does work and is easy to operate.

Fortunately,the manufacturers…understand that…。 how something works作care的宾语从句。it does work and is easy to operate做第二个care的宾语从句。

经典例题343 A single lychee(荔枝)from a tree that once produced fruit for Chinese emperors sold for a record555,000yuan($67,053)at a weekend auction in China’s affluent southern province of Guangdong, state media said.It did not say what the company plans to do with lychee, but it is becoming increasingly common for companies in Guangdong to buy expensive items at auctions to generate publicity.

It did not say…,but it is becoming…to generate publicity。 前一分句中,what the company plans to do with lychee作say的宾语。

344 Above everything else will still rise the questioning,tough_minded hunger for learning, for pushing the boundaries of knowledge ever outwards, that has characterized this university from the first.

Above everything else will still rise…,that has characterized…。这是一个倒装句,主语是the questioning,tough_minded hunger for…;指示代词that指代the questioning,tough_minded hunger for learning, for pushing the boundaries of knowledge ever o

345 We will increasingly use internet_based computer courses,to enhance our own teaching and also to reach students outside the university. That doesn’t mean computer terminals will displace people;students are always going to need advice and high_quality tuition on the spot.

That doesn’t mean…;students are always going to need…。 We will increasingly use…outside the university。

348 Its destiny lay in another kind of economic endeavor, and from a very early date, many New Englanders combined farming with other work, thereby living better lives than they would have had they been confined to the resources of their own farms.

349 It was said by Sir George Bernard Shaw that“England and America are two countries separated by the same language.”My first personal experience of this was when I worked as a camp counselor for two months in2000in a summer Camp run by the Boy Scouts of America,as part of an international leader exchange scheme.

My first personal experience of this was when I worked…。 主句中的this指代前文的“England and American are two countries separated by the same language”;在表语从句中,过去分词短语run by the Boy Scouts of America作a Summer Camp的后置定语,而介词词组as part of a n international leader exchange scheme作状语。

350 British speech tends to be less general, and directed more,in nuances of meaning,at a sub_group of the population. This has become a kind of code,in which few words are spoken because each, along with its attendant murmurings and pauses, carries a wealth of shared assumptions and attitudes.

This has become a kind of code,in which few words are spoken because each…,carries…。 British speech tends to be…,at a sub_group of the population, code的意思是“规范,规则”,此处根据上下文应指“社会规范”;非限制性定语从句又包含了because引导的原因状语从句,该状语从句中的主语each是指each word,介词词组along with its attendant murmurings and pauses在这里作状语,其中its指代前面的each(word),词组a wealth of是“丰富的”之意,而shared assumptions and attitudes的意思是“共同的假定与态度”。

351 The discovery that adenosine receptors play a central physiologic role in limiting inflammation is an important conceptual advance. It may allow us to develop new ways to enhance the inflammatory response;when that is desirable,to make better vaccines(疫苗)and anti_tumor(抗肿瘤)drugs.

It may allow us to…;when that is…,to make…。 第一个分句中的it指代前文的the discovery;在第二个分句中,when引导了时间状语从句,其中的that指代前面分句里的new ways to enhance the inflammatory response,同时第二个分句中的动词不定式to make better vaccines…之前省略了it may allows。

352 It was the use of IQ tests to limit the opportunities of most other people that led to the anti_IQ rebellion that broke out in the last third of the century. It was probably most intense in Britain, whose public schools at mid_century had adopted a particularly severe system of sorting by test at age11.

It was…intense in Britain,whose public schools…had adopted…。 主句中的it指前文的the anti_IQ rebellion;定语从句中的宾语system后面跟了介词词组of sorting by test at age11作它的后置定语。

It is hard to predict how science is going to turn out,and if it is really good science it is impossible to predict. If the things to be found are actually new, they are by definition unknown in advance. You cannot make choices in this matter.(61)You either have science or you don’t,and if you have it you are obliged to accept the surprising and disturbing pieces of information, along with the neat and promptly useful bits.

The only solid piece of scientific truth about which I feel totally confident is that we are profoundly ignorant about nature.Indeed,I regard this as the major discovery of the past hundred years of biology. It is,in its way,an illuminating piece of news.(62)It would have amazed the brightest minds of the18th century Enlightenment to be told by any of us how little we know and how bewildering the way ahead seems.(63)It is this sudden confrontation with the depth and scope of ignorance that represents the most significant contribution of the20th century science to the human intellect. In earlier times,we either pretended to understand how things worked or ignored the problem,or simply made up stories to fill the gaps. Now that we have begun exploring in earnest,we are getting glimpses of how huge the questions are,and how far from being answered.Because of this,we are depressed.(64)It is not so bad being ignorant if you are totally ignorant the hard thing is knowing in some detail the reality of ignorance, the worst spots and here and there the not_so_bad spots, but no true light at the end of the tunnel nor even any tunnels that can yet be trusted.

But we are making a beginning and there ought to be some satisfaction. There are probably no questions we can think up that can’t be answered, sooner or later, including even the matter of consciousness.(65)To be sure, there may well be questions we can’t think up,ever, and therefore limits to the reach of human intellect, but that is another matter.Within our limits,we should be able to work our way through to all our answers if we keep at it long enough, and pay attention.

You either have science or you don’t,and…you are obliged to accept the…pieces of information…。 前面分句补充完整为you either have science or you don’t have science;其中either…or…

It would have amazed the brightest minds…to be told…how…and how…。it为形式主语,真正的主语为后面的不定式结构to be told…。

It is this sudden confrontation…that represents the most significant contribution…。It is…that…

It is not so bad being ignorant if…;the hard thing is knowing…the reality…,but no true light…nor even any tunnels…。 后一分句的knowing和no true light…nor even any tunnels由but连接作谓语;句尾that引导的定语从句修饰tunnels。

  (65) 结构分析: 句子框架是there may well be questions…,and therefore limits…,but that is another matter。 前面的分句为there be句型,questions和limits并列作其宾语we can’t think up为省略了关系代词that或which的定语从句修饰questions。
