  Martians and more

Everyone is listening to the radio. Each newsflash is more terrible. Aliens have invaded Earth!

Would you believe a radio report that Martians had landed on Earth? Thousands of people did. Some hoaxers use the radio, the newspaper or photographs to make their hoaxes seem real.

  The Day of the Martians

It was 1938. A newsflash interrupted the music on the radio. There were blue flames on Mars! The music continued. Then there was another newsflash. A meteor had fallen in New Jersey. No, it wasn誸 a meteor. It was a spaceship ?full of Martian soldiers. They were marching. They were armed...

meteor: a flaming streak in the sky, caused when small pieces of space rock burn up as they pass through the Earth’s atmosphere. 流星

People ran into the streets. There was panic everywhere.

By that night, most people knew the truth. The world was safe. Actor Orson Welles had been reading H. G. Wells’book The War of the Worlds on the radio for Halloween.

panic: a feeling of anxiety which is so great that you cannot do anything at all.

  Life on the Moon?

In 1835 —about 100 years before the Martian radio play —people in New York read an amazing story in the Sun newspaper. There was life on the moon!

The paper said that Sir John Herschel, a famous British astronomer, had invented a powerful telescope. Through it, he could see fantastic things on the moon, including pyramids, blue unicorns and human-like creatures with bat wings.

marvelous: something that is wonderful and excellent.

  Phoneygraphs

We believe what we see with our own eyes. But sometimes it is best to look at things twice! Hoaxers have produced photographs of aliens, UFOs and ghosts!

In 1934, Dr Robert Wilson photographed a long-necked creature in the murky water of Loch Ness in Scotland. Many people believed that this was one of the first photographs of the Loch Ness monster. What do you think?
