新闻漫画解读:黑人记者更受青睐

  Last week's cartoon played on the revelation that Jayson Blair, a young black reporter at the TheNewYorkTimes, had been falsifying material in his articles for several months. Many people suspect that early evidence of this was ignored by senior editors eager to nurture the careers of "minority" reporters.

  In today's cartoon Pat Oliphant's skill at presenting social comedy①is on vivid display.In frame 1, one of the proprietors of the Times demands action from his executive editor,"Howell what's-his-name "(Howell Raines, but he can't re-call the surname). Newspapers in the US tend to be fairly horizontal organizations; ideally, reporters and editors are professionals who treat one other with respect. Oliphant, who dislikes the imperial management style of the proud Times, gives it a corporate chain of command that relays intemper-ate orders from top to "bottom".②But remember that reporters, though employees of a firm, are no one's subordinates -- in their own view, and Oliphant's.

  In frame 3, Oliphant takes a dig at the declining editorial standards of the Times ("But we don't have any copy editors"). And the status-conscious reporters, in eternal war with editors, demand to be known by the slightly more prestigious (or pretentious) term "journalist"③even as they are threatened with dismissal.

  But the punch line comes in the last frame, when the reporter asks whether all journalists are to be fired, black as well as white. Suddenly the barking editor is unsure of himself, suspecting or perhaps knowing as he does④that the senior edi-tors, his distant overlords, do show a special leniency with minority staff.

  This cartoon is studded with excellent caricatures, for instance, the wonderful executive secretary in the first frame. More subtle is the depiction of the persnickety and molish-looking journalist: with his academic bow tie and nose haughtily up in the air, this Times reporter is almost certainly a bookish Ivy League graduate with no lack of self-esteem and also no great familiarity with life on the street.

  上周刊登的漫画嘲讽的是《纽约时报》青年黑人记者杰森-布莱尔数月来在文章中捏造新闻事实被披露一事。很多人都怀疑其作假的早期证据是被那些急于培养“少数民族”记者的高级编辑们忽视了。

  在今天的漫画中,漫画家帕特-奥列芬特表现社会幽默的技能生动地展示出来。在第一格中,一位《纽约时报》的老板要求他的执行主编豪威尔-雷恩斯采取行动,“豪威尔他姓什么来着?”(豪威尔姓雷恩斯,可是这位老板记不起来了。)美国的报社内部通常是一个相当横向的平级机构,从理念上说,记者和编辑是彼此相互尊重的专业人士。奥列芬特不喜欢骄傲的《纽约时报》帝王式的管理风格,他画出了一个从领导到“底层”传递随心所欲的命令的指挥链条。然而请记住,记者虽说是报社的雇员,但在他们自己看来(同时也是奥列芬特的观点),并非是谁的下级。

  在第三格中,奥列芬特挖苦了《纽约时报》日益衰落的编辑体制(“我们一个文字编辑都没有了”)。而对地位很敏感的记者们,在与编辑之间的内部斗争中,即便是在面临解雇威胁的时候,也要求用稍带敬意(或做作)的journalist一词称呼他们。

  而最妙的一句话是在最后一格,当一名记者问是否所有的记者,不管是黑人白人,都要被解雇时,怒吼的编辑突然间自己也疑惑了,他怀疑或者已经知道报社资深编辑们--也就是高高在上的老板,会对少数民族雇员表现出特别的仁慈,他以前就经历过这种事。

  这幅漫画中满是出色的人物形象,例如,第一格中惟妙惟肖的女秘书。更妙的是那些难对付的相貌像鼹鼠似的记者:系着学院派的蝴蝶结领带、鼻子傲慢地向上翘着。这些《纽约时报》的记者几乎都是从美国名牌大学(常青藤)毕业的书生气十足的人,他们不乏自信,但却缺少对实际生活的深入了解。
