  Model Test Three

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic My View on Disposable Products. You should write at least 12
0 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

  My View on Disposable Products

Life is becoming increasingly convenient, especially to those busy people who are always rushing, and no doubt disposable products contribute a lot to this convenience.

Owing to disposable lunch cans, people can have their lunch without worrying about the dishwashing. Disposable toothbrushes, combs and other stuff ensure personal hygiene of the guests in hotels. At the same time, however, large scale use of disposable products will certainly hurt the environment because natural resources are very limited. Besides, huge quantities of garbage resulting from the use of disposable products have been another problem puzzling human beings.

In my opinion, the existence of disposable products is perfectly justified, but its use should be strictly restricted. More eco-friendly ways such as thorough cleaning and reusing should be introduced to achieve both convenience and conservation of the environment.

  Model Test Four

To Work in Big Cities or Small Cities

To Work in Big Cities or Small Cities

Some college students dream of working in big cities after graduation. They believe that there are many better up-to-date research institutes, higher living conditions, more entertainment facilities, and better working chances. All these will do great good to their future development.

Others prefer to work in small cities. Though living and working conditions in small cities are not as good as those in big cities, there are still some advantages of working in the small cities. For example, living expenses are low. Housing condition is quite better than in big cities. Pollution problem is not as serious as that in big cities. Your life will be less competitive and closer to nature. As the Internet technology has developed so fast, you don’t need to worry about being isolated from the modern world.

As to me, I think both of the above opinions are reasonable. If I have a chance to work in big cities, I should seize the chance and try to achieve more in my career. I’ll have to suffer from crowded housing, air pollution, and traffic jam. If my field does not need many students in big cities, I’ll accept it happily and enjoy my life in small cities. Our country needs me to serve the people there. In addition, I may develop fully in a small city. In a word, what counts is not where to work, but what to do in your future life.

  Model Test Seven

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic College Life in Internet Era. You should write at least 120 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

  College Life in Internet Era

  A.College Life in Internet Era

Seeing so many college students using the Internet, some people feel quite pleased and argue that the Internet has provided a more convenient way for students to study and communicate, but others feel much worried and argue that it has made some students neglect their studies.

In my view, the Internet does offer students an efficient way to study and exchange views. What’s more, the Internet may provide timely information which otherwise cannot be obtained. Through the Internet, students may also communicate with overseas students or professors whom they will probably never see.

Indeed some information on the Internet is not so decent or proper, but so long as students guard against such information, the Internet will certainly become an indispensable partner in their study.

  Model Test Eight

Do You Agree “All Work No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy”?

Do You Agree “All Work No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy”?

I agree with the above saying. To begin with, work, includes mental toiling and physical laboring, and play are not contradictory but interact with each other in a positive way. The following will show how they work side by side.

First, work is necessary to our mind and body, but we need time to refresh ourselves as machines do to be refueled. Neither our brains nor our muscles can do without sufficient relaxation, since both are inevitably worn out after a certain period of work. We should know that our capacity is limited. Too much work will dull our wit. Without recreation our brains could become blockheads. I strongly hold the idea that one should stop working in order to continue to work and work better.

Secondly, play can do us good in many ways. Play is one of the natural sources of human ability. Life experience is what we get when we are playing, besides learning and working. In return, we apply our experience to our work. Play will help develop our minds, sharpen our intelligence.

In short, no matter what you are, either a mental toiler or a physical laborer, you have to follow "Hard work and adequate play make Jack a clever boy", if you desire to have a successful life.

  B)Annual Expenses on Learning English

The pie charts show us the proportion comparison of English materials purchase made by the college students in X city in the early 90s and in 2003. In 2003 there are more new choices for the students to spend money on, like Internet(10%), CD\VCD(30%), and tapes(20%). In the early 90s there were only tapes(35%) and reference books(67%). At the same time, the other graph shows that the average outgoings on English materials have increased from 60 yuan in the early 90s to 170 yuan in 2003. From these two graphs, we have learned that there are more choices of materials in learning English and students spend more money on English learning.

Some reasons can explain this trend. First, many students realize the importance of learning English. English is widely used all over the world. It has become an important international language. Second, since China entered WTO, learning English has become more popular. It is difficult to find a decent job without fluent English communicating skills. Third, as science and technology have been developing so fast, these latest English learning facilities have already been proved far more useful and effective than the books.

In my opinion, this growing trend might be different in the future. Nowadays most pupils begin to learn English. One day in the future college students don’t need to spend so much in learning English. Their English will be as fluent as those native speakers.

  Model Test Nine

Which do You Prefer—Living in or out of the Campus?

Which do You Prefer—Living in or out of the Campus?

Recent years college students are allowed to live alone off campus. Some people still take it for granted that college students should live on campus where they can learn from each other. They often neglect the fact that living in such small, noisy, crowded, inconvenient and simply furnished dormitories restricts the students’ freedom, hinders their individual character development, and cuts off the students from the latest happenings of the world.

Therefore, my attitude for living off campus is positive. The reasons are just as follows.

First, it benefits my study. I can stay up as late as I want. I can read aloud, listen to the tapes to practice my listening skills, and even learn things through Internet surfing. What’s more, it broadens my social cycle. I can meet my parents, relatives, and friends freely, and invite them to my place. I can even practice my cooking skills. And at last, living alone off campus provides necessary privacy for me. I can enjoy a comfortable, convenient and independent life. I don’t need to worry about bringing inconvenience to others and to be bothered by others.

In conclusion, it’s really nice living alone off campus. There are so many advantages. If you have enough financial support, you can try this appealing way of college life.

  Model Test Ten

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic What to Emphasize in an Interview? You should write at least 120 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

What to Emphasize in an Interview?

Interview is the most critical moment in getting a job. Some people argue that it is important to show one’s educational background and academic performance during an interview; others argue instead that one’s social experiences and practical competence should be more focused on.

Personally, I incline to agree with the latter. The reason why a company chooses an employee is not that he has high marks, but that he will bring practical help to it. High marks in examinations are nothing but theoretical and cannot prove one’s use value to a company. Yet use value is what a company most concerns while choosing employees.

So during an interview, one should show his practical ability as much as possible to convince the interviewer of his value to the company.

  C.A Letter to a Friend

  Dear Li Hua,

Your letter has given me a pleasant surprise. I am very glad you can come to Beijing this summer. I have been looking forward to your coming.

In your letter you asked me about the SARS situation in Beijing. In fact, the resent situation is not so serious as months ago, but you should not treat it lightly. During this critical period I’ll give you some suggestions on your traveling. For one thing, when you go to the crowded places you’d better wear a mouth-mask, which can decrease the chance of infection. For another, do not make yourself too tired during your tour, or your body's immune status will decrease. The last but not the least, wash your hands frequently and particularly after any contact with other bodies. By the, eating more vegetables is also recommended.

I’m eager to meet you soon in Beijing. Wish you a pleasant trip in Beijing.

  Yours sincerely

  Zhang Li
