  Part V Writing

  How to Keep Fit?

Health is far more important than wealth and wisdom. Good health enables us to enjoy our life and achieve what we hope for in our career. On the other hand, poor health tends to deprive our interest in everything around us. How to stay healthy concerns everyone, though we have advanced medicine. When we discuss this, some fundamental principles should be brought in mind.

Firstly, it is very important for us to take more fruits and vegetables because they provide vitamins and they help in the process of digestion. Secondly, we have to keep a balanced diet and maintain regular eating habits. Proper nutrition is important for good health. Avoid food with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein. Thirdly, we’d better do morning exercise everyday, do sports frequently to make our bodies strong. Besides, we have to avoid too much work pressure. Getting too tired all the time may definitely weaken our defense system, making us get sick easily. Finally, we have to get rid of those bad habits that damage our health, such as drinking and smoking.

In conclusion, if we stick to things according to the aspects mentioned above, we’ll lead a healthy life and become as fit as a fiddle.

  Model Test Two

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Work—Source of Nerves and Frustration or Happiness. You should write no less than 150 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

Work—Source of Nerves and Frustration or Happiness

  Part V Writing

Work—Source of Nerves and Frustration or Happiness

Different people have different attitudes toward work. Some people believe that work is the source of pressure. They claim that in such competitive society you have to work very hard to seize the little chance of promotion, to solve the housing problems, and to support their families etc. Therefore, work has brought about so much frustration and problems.

Some people, on the other hand, think differently. They say that work of any kind offers many rewards. Work is more than a necessity for most of us. If we have no work to do, spending every day idly, we’ll begin to lose interest in everything. Our life will become meaningless. In the other words, happiness is dependant upon work. Sometimes we complain that we have too much work, but we fail to realize that it is our work that keeps us growing and help us to become successful and happy.

In my opinion, although everything has its both positive and negative sides, I would like to agree to the latter. True happiness originates from hard work. No matter what we do and no matter how much pressure we can get, we must try our best to work hard and be optimistic. We must keep one thing in our mind. Happiness is always waiting for us in the end if we work hard.

  3.对火灾原因的分析

  参考作文:

  An Eye-Witness Account of a Fire(适用于四级)

It was last Saturday morning. I was walking toward the small bookstore near our school when I heard people’s screams. I quickened my steps toward the source of the screams and saw the gas station just opposite the bookstore was on fire.

The front of the gas station and a car in front of it were on fire. People were shouting and running about and water was poured out from pipes. The car on fire was soon put out, badly damaged. But it was very difficult to put out the big fire on the gas station. Just at the urgent moment, there came the screams of fire trucks. With the help of the firefighters, the whole situation was quickly under control.

I don’t know the exact reason why the gas station caught fire. But I think everyone should be careful at a gas station, because even a smoking cigarette can easily damage it.

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic A Boom in Adult Education. You should write no less than 150 words and you should base your composition on the chart and the outline (given in Chinese) below:

  A Boom in Adult Education

  __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  Part V Writing

  A Boom in Adult Education

From the graph, we know the statistics of the adult education participation and the increasing numbers of the participants in X city. In 1989 there were only thirty people taking part in the adult education, but in 1994 the number has grown to eighty-four thousand people, and in 1999, a hundred and sixteen thousand, and in 2004, the number of adult education participation reached its top: a hundred and seventy thousand. It can be seen easily that there are more and more people who hope to get advanced degrees and gain more knowledge after they began to work.

There are many reasons responsible for the great change, and the following are the typical ones. For one thing, during the work people begin to realize what they have learned before is far more than enough. They know what kind of knowledge they need. In addition, as the science and technology in China are developing so fast, adults after graduation have to go back to universities to refresh themselves and improve their competitive ability in society. The main reason is the population growth that affects people’s promotion chances. Many people without bachelor degrees have become laid off employees. Therefore, such competitive social background stimulates many people to continue to study.

However, this graph may not predict the entire situation in the future. I believe one thing is quite certain that education can’t be separated from our social development.

  参考作文:

  My View on Disposable Products

  1.随着人们生活节奏的加快,一次性用品越来越多。

  2.使用一次性用品的利与弊。

  3. 我的看法。

  参考作文:

  My View on Disposable Products

Life is becoming increasingly convenient, especially to those busy people who are always rushing, and no doubt disposable products contribute a lot to this convenience.

Owing to disposable lunch cans, people can have their lunch without worrying about the dishwashing. Disposable toothbrushes, combs and other stuff ensure personal hygiene of the guests in hotels. At the same time, however, large scale use of disposable products will certainly hurt the environment because natural resources are very limited. Besides, huge quantities of garbage resulting from the use of disposable products have been another problem puzzling human beings.

In my opinion, the existence of disposable products is perfectly justified, but its use should be strictly restricted. More eco-friendly ways such as thorough cleaning and reusing should be introduced to achieve both convenience and conservation of the environment.

  Model Test Four

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Video Games and Teenagers. You should write no less than 150 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

  1.孩子玩

电子游戏可以促进智力发展。

  2.儿童自制能力差,容易上瘾而荒废学业。

  3.我的看法。

  Video Games and Teenagers

  __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  Part V Writing

  Video Games and Teenagers

Video games have become very popular in recent years. Wherever you go, you can always see teenagers indulged in the games. When they play the games in clubs, stores, or at homes, they concentrate all their attention on it, with their hands busy operating. Obviously games give them great pleasure and satisfaction.

Just as a coin has two sides, video games also have advantages and disadvantages. They can train teenagers to respond to things quickly, and stimulate their imagination and interest in electronics and computer science. But on the other hand, some teenagers, especially school children, spend too much time playing them, which certainly do harm to their health and eyes and affect their school achievements.

In my opinion, video games are a kind of wonderful entertainment, but if you play them too much and interfere with your study in school. I think you should stop them immediately. And if you have enough self-control capacity in playing video games, you can certainly obtain pleasure and benefit from them.

  Yours sincerely,

  Susan

A Letter to the University Newspaper on Changing Teaching System

A Letter to the University Newspaper on Changing Teaching System

  August 15, 2003

  Dear Sirs,

I’m sending you this letter to offer my opinions regarding whether we should change traditionally unitary teaching system into a tri-dimensional one, which has recently become a heated issue in your paper.

In my view, both traditional teaching and tri-dimensional one have their advantages and disadvantages. While traditional teaching does have such limit as restricting students’ vision, it offers a face-to-face communication between teachers and students that no other teaching can provide. Similarly, while tri-dimensional teaching offers a more convenient way of studying, it will somehow make students more passive simply because they have no opportunity to speak out.

Personally I think it would be better to integrate these two teaching methods so as to fully utilize their advantages and avoid their disadvantages.

  Model Test Five

  参考作文:

Does Technology Make a Better World to Live in

  1.一些人认为科技进步使得现代生活方便和快捷。

  2.另一些人认为这些新技术带来了许多问题(污染、疾病、社会隐患、高科技犯罪)。

  3.你的看法。

  参考作文:

Does Technology Make a Better World to Live in

Does technology make a better world to live in? Some people say yes because they think technology has made modern life convenient and efficient; others, however, say no because they think technology has brought about numerous problems such as pollution, diseases, crimes and other social hidden troubles.

Apparently, both arguments are quite sound; but the point is that technology itself is neither good nor bad. We can’t simply attribute all good or evils to technology, which is only a tool. What really matters is how we shall use it and for what purpose.

So in my view, technology is a sign of social development. Instead of hindering its development, we should utilize it properly and fully so as to make our life much more pleasant.

  Model Test Six

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic To Work in Big Cities or Small Cities. You should write no less than 150 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

  1.一些人认为在大城市工作对个人发展有利。

  2.另一些人认为在小城市工作更舒适。

  3.我的看法。

To Work in Big Cities or Small Cities

  __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  Part V Writing

To Work in Big Cities or Small Cities

Some college students dream of working in big cities after graduation. They believe that there are many better up-to-date research institutes, higher living conditions, more entertainment facilities, and better working chances. All these will do great good to their future development.

Others prefer to work in small cities. Though living and working conditions in small cities are not as good as those in big cities, there are still some advantages of working in the small cities. For example, living expenses are low. Housing condition is quite better than in big cities. Pollution problem is not as serious as that in big cities. Your life will be less competitive and closer to nature. As the Internet technology has developed so fast, you don’t need to worry about being isolated from the modern world.

As to me, I think both of the above opinions are reasonable. If I have a chance to work in big cities, I should seize the chance and try to achieve more in my career. I’ll have to suffer from crowded housing, air pollution, and traffic jam. If my field does not need many students in big cities, I’ll accept it happily and enjoy my life in small cities. Our country needs me to serve the people there. In addition, I may develop fully in a small city. In a word, what counts is not where to work, but what to do in your future life.

  Model Test Seven

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Do You Agree “All Work No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy”? You should write no less than 150 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

  1.一些人只顾工作,忽视了休息。

  2.劳逸结合,方能提高效率。

Do You Agree “All Work No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy”?

  __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  Part V Writing

Do You Agree “All Work No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy”?

I agree with the above saying. To begin with, work, includes mental toiling and physical laboring, and play are not contradictory but interact with each other in a positive way. The following will show how they work side by side.

First, work is necessary to our mind and body, but we need time to refresh ourselves as machines do to be refueled. Neither our brains nor our muscles can do without sufficient relaxation, since both are inevitably worn out after a certain period of work. We should know that our capacity is limited. Too much work will dull our wit. Without recreation our brains could become blockheads. I strongly hold the idea that one should stop working in order to continue to work and work better.

Secondly, play can do us good in many ways. Play is one of the natural sources of human ability. Life experience is what we get when we are playing, besides learning and working. In return, we apply our experience to our work. Play will help develop our minds, sharpen our intelligence.

In short, no matter what you are, either a mental toiler or a physical laborer, you have to follow "Hard work and adequate play make Jack a clever boy", if you desire to have a successful life.

  参考作文:

  College Life in Internet Era

  1.网络使大学生学习、交流更加便捷。

  2.一些人沉迷于网络,荒废学业。

  3.你的看法:如何合理利用网络。

  参考作文:

  College Life in Internet Era

Seeing so many college students using the Internet, some people feel quite pleased and argue that the Internet has provided a more convenient way for students to study and communicate, but others feel much worried and argue that it has made some students neglect their studies.

In my view, the Internet does offer students an efficient way to study and exchange views. What’s more, the Internet may provide timely information which otherwise cannot be obtained. Through the Internet, students may also communicate with overseas students or professors whom they will probably never see.

Indeed some information on the Internet is not so decent or proper, but so long as students guard against such information, the Internet will certainly become an indispensable partner in their study.

  Model Test Eight

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Annual Expenses on Learning English. You should write no less than 150 words and you should base your composition on the chart and the outline (given in Chinese) below:

  插入图pic_4

  1.上图为某城市90年代初和2003年大学生者购买英语资料变化图,请描述图表内容。

  2.解释发生以上变化的原因(可涉及对英语的重视程度增加;科技发展使新的学习产品不断涌现)。

  3.我的看法。

  Annual Expenses on Learning English

  _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  Part V Writing

  Annual Expenses on Learning English

The pie charts show us the proportion comparison of English materials purchase made by the college students in X city in the early 90s and in 2003. In 2003 there are more new choices for the students to spend money on, like Internet(10%), CD\VCD(30%), and tapes(20%). In the early 90s there were only tapes(35%) and reference books(67%). At the same time, the other graph shows that the average outgoings on English materials have increased from 60 yuan in the early 90s to 170 yuan in 2003. From these two graphs, we have learned that there are more choices of materials in learning English and students spend more money on English learning.

Some reasons can explain this trend. First, many students realize the importance of learning English. English is widely used all over the world. It has become an important international language. Second, since China entered WTO, learning English has become more popular. It is difficult to find a decent job without fluent English communicating skills. Third, as science and technology have been developing so fast, these latest English learning facilities have already been proved far more useful and effective than the books.

In my opinion, this growing trend might be different in the future. Nowadays most pupils begin to learn English. One day in the future college students don’t need to spend so much in learning English. Their English will be as fluent as those native speakers.

  Model Test Nine

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Which do You Prefer—Living in or out of the Campus? You should write no less than 150 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

  1.一些大学生认为住在校外好。

  2.另一些大学生认为住学生宿舍好。

  3.我的看法。

Which do You Prefer—Living in or out of the Campus?

  __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  Part V Writing

Which do You Prefer—Living in or out of the Campus?

Recent years college students are allowed to live alone off campus. Some people still take it for granted that college students should live on campus where they can learn from each other. They often neglect the fact that living in such small, noisy, crowded, inconvenient and simply furnished dormitories restricts the students’ freedom, hinders their individual character development, and cuts off the students from the latest happenings of the world.

Therefore, my attitude for living off campus is positive. The reasons are just as follows.

First, it benefits my study. I can stay up as late as I want. I can read aloud, listen to the tapes to practice my listening skills, and even learn things through Internet surfing. What’s more, it broadens my social cycle. I can meet my parents, relatives, and friends freely, and invite them to my place. I can even practice my cooking skills. And at last, living alone off campus provides necessary privacy for me. I can enjoy a comfortable, convenient and independent life. I don’t need to worry about bringing inconvenience to others and to be bothered by others.

In conclusion, it’s really nice living alone off campus. There are so many advantages. If you have enough financial support, you can try this appealing way of college life.

Should the College Students Choose the Subject by Themselves?

  1.中国目前的高校依然以必修课为主,学生必须修完所指定的科目,也有少量选修课程。

  2.是否应让大学生根据自己的兴趣爱好来自行选择大学中的学习课程。

  你的看法。

  参考作文:

Should the College Students Choose the Subject by Themselves?

Most courses in universities and colleges today are compulsory, however, there are a few courses that are optional. Despite its small percentage, optional courses have given rise to the question whether college students should choose their courses at their own wills.

As far as I am concerned, I think college students should be encouraged to choose courses they are interested in. As the saying goes, “interest is the best teacher”. Students will certainly study more efficiently the subjects they willingly choose than the ones they are forced to choose. What’s more, because the subjects they choose are no longer a burden, they may become more active in the study concerned.

So I incline to say that colleges and universities should set up more optional courses for students to choose.

  Model Test Ten

  Part V Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Write a Letter to your friend (Li Hua) who is going to travel to Beijing this summer. You should write no less than 150 words according to the suggestions given below in Chinese.

  A Letter to a Friend

  Part V Writing

  A Letter to a Friend

  Dear Li Hua,

Your letter has given me a pleasant surprise. I am very glad you can come to Beijing this summer. I have been looking forward to your coming.

In your letter you asked me about the SARS situation in Beijing. In fact, the resent situation is not so serious as months ago, but you should not treat it lightly. During this critical period I’ll give you some suggestions on your traveling. For one thing, when you go to the crowded places you’d better wear a mouth-mask, which can decrease the chance of infection. For another, do not make yourself too tired during your tour, or your body's immune status will decrease. The last but not the least, wash your hands frequently and particularly after any contact with other bodies. By the, eating more vegetables is also recommended.

I’m eager to meet you soon in Beijing. Wish you a pleasant trip in Beijing.

  Yours sincerely

  Zhang Li

  参考作文:

What to Emphasize in an Interview?

Interview is the most critical moment in getting a job. Some people argue that it is important to show one’s educational background and academic performance during an interview; others argue instead that one’s social experiences and practical competence should be more focused on.

Personally, I incline to agree with the latter. The reason why a company chooses an employee is not that he has high marks, but that he will bring practical help to it. High marks in examinations are nothing but theoretical and cannot prove one’s use value to a company. Yet use value is what a company most concerns while choosing employees.

So during an interview, one should show his practical ability as much as possible to convince the interviewer of his value to the company.
